An analogue-to-digital converter of the type in which each of a sequence of known voltages is compared with an unknown voltage until a balance is obtained, is characterized in that the digital representation is in the scale of three. Two embodiments are described. In the first, a trinary counter using trinary stages, for example of the type described in Specification 1,061,404 in which it is referred to, counts clock pulses until its output, converted into a corresponding amplitude significant voltage by weighted resistors, balances the input voltage, and in the second the stages of a trinary register are sequentially turned on and selectively turned off until its contents, converted to analogue form as before, balance the input voltage. The digital output can be recorded on magnetic tape.
