Abstract
1,061,101. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. COLODENSE Ltd. Jan. 26, 1966 [Feb. 2, 1965], No. 4508/65. Heading B5K. At least two sheets 3 of flexible heat-sealable material are heat-sealed between a pair of heated jaws 1, 2 and, after heat sealing, are removed from the jaws 1, 2 by directing jets of air from the heat sealing surfaces 8 of the jaws against the sheets 3. The material of the sheets 3 may be a heat sealable film, e.g. polyethylene or polypropylene, a non-heat-sealable base coated on one or both sides with a heat-sealable coating, e.g. cellulose film coated with a nitrocellulose or a vinylidene chloride copolymer coating, aluminium foil coated with polyvinyl acetate, or paper or a woven or non-woven fabric coated with a heatsealable composition. Preferably, the temperature of the air forming the jets is such that the jaws are not appreciably cooled, e.g. the temperature of the jaws may be 120-140‹ C. and that of the air at least 100‹ C. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, the steel jaws 1, 2 each contain electrical heating elements 4 and a piston 9 slidably mounted in a chamber 5. In operation, the jaws 1, 2 grip the sheets under pressure whilst heat sealing them together. During heat sealing, air in the chambers 5 is heated by the jaws 1, 2 up to a temperature approaching that of the jaws. After heat sealing, the jaws 1, 2 begin to move apart and, simultaneously, each piston 9 moves to the dotted line position to force heated air out of passageways 6 as air jets to separate the sheets 3 from the jaws 1, 2. As the piston 9 returns to its original position, air from the atmosphere is drawn into the chamber 5 through a port 10 having a one-way valve 11. The movement of the pistons 9 may be controlled by a cam mechanism working in conjunction with the opening and closing mechanism for the jaws 1, 2. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 3 and 4 (both not shown), jaws 12, 13 have gripping faces 8<SP>1</SP> which are serrated in a meshing relationship. Extra heaters 4<SP>1</SP> are provided around the chamber 5. During sealing, the sheets 3 are lightly gripped by the points 14 of the serrations and the pistons 9 are actuated immediately, or slightly before, the jaws 12, 13 contact the sheets 3 so that the heated air jets assist in heat sealing. The apparatus may be manually operated or may form one stage of a packaging machine.
