Abstract
1,060,803. Measuring shrinkage electrically. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 2, 1963, No.30709/63. Headings G1N and G1S. Apparatus for use in laboratory shrinkage tests on a solid material which cakes on storage comprises a mould to be filled with a sample 1 of the material, a movable member for applying pressure to the material, to cause it to shrink, and a device 17 for indicating the movement of the member. Pressure is applied to the sample by a plunger 12, the mould being sealed by a reentrant diaphragm 4 which prevents loss of liquid; and the device 17 may be a potentiometer. A plug 6 in the base plate of the mould may be removed and the force required on the plunger to push out a cylinder of the caked material measured, to give an indication of caking strength. Friction is reduced by greasing the walls of the mould and lining them with polythene or polytetrafluorethylene; and by embodying a flexible diaphragm between a plunger-actuating piston 9 and its cylinder 13, the piston rod 10 passing through a co-sintered polytetrafluorethylene and bronze bush 15. The apparatus may be used as in Specification 1,060,804.
