A device for pulling off stockings from forms comprises a column 1 mounted vertically on the floor or on a finishing machine, a frame 7 moveable thereon in the direction of the legs of the forms a plurality of grippers 12, 13 mounted on the frame for displacement in the direction of the feet of the forms and a carriage 27 or rods for moving the grippers. The various movements are controlled by suitable pneumatic or hydraulic means and the device is preferably associated with a depositing means (Fig. 6) as is shown in Fig. 7. In operation a packet of forms with stockings, the treatment of which is finished, is brought before the pulling off device as seen in Fig. 2 (plan view). The frame 7 with the grippers is lowered until the grippers are located in the region of the foot portions between each two adjacent forms, the heel grippers 13 are then inflated by compressed air so as to grip the stockings. The frame 7 is then lifted slightly to disengage the heel portion (grippers 13 pivots at 14), grippers 12 are then inflated to grip the tip portions of the stocking and by actuating carriage 27 in frame 7 the foot portions are pulled off. Thereafter, the frame 7 with all the stockings moves upwardly on column 1 until the upper position C is reached. Pistons 22 and 22a are then operated to force the gripping devices together so that the stockings are brought together ready for depositing. Cantilever arm 38 of the depositing device (Fig. 6) and having thereon a depositing tube 42 then moves from A to B (Fig. 8), the tube 42 engaging the stockings at about half their length. At position B spring bow 13 is turned down to grip the stockings on to tube 42 and grippers 12, 13 are deflated to release the stockings. Arm 38 then moves to position C and is lowered in height and the tube 42 with the stockings thereon is deposited in frame 55. Arm 38 then travels to position D where it picks up another tube 42 from magazine 60 ready for the next packet of stockings. For initially orientating the forms to a parallel' formation, a comb-like orienting lever 73 having prongs 74 is provided on the column 1, and to assist the entry of grippers between the forms they have a central stiffened web portion with inflatable elastic skin portions on both sides. In other embodiments a depositing plate is used instead of depositing tubes so that the stockings are deposited flat, i.e. not folded; endless belts are used for depositing the stockings; the forms are initially arranged in a segment of a circle with a central lifting device and in a further embodiment the movement of the carriage means 27 is horizontal, a combination of horizontal and vertical movement being used to remove the stocking from the former.
