Impulse measuring apparatus comprises an enclosure 1 containing a liquid 2, for example mercury, to which a force is applied and an outlet orifice 1b suitably calibrated so that the quantity of liquid passing through the orifice in a time interval will be proportional to the time integral of the force and thus give a measure of its impulse in that interval. The force may be applied by introducing a pressure medium through an orifice la or by submitting the enclosure 1 to an acceleration in the direction F. In a modification a closely fitting piston may be used in a container of larger diameter and in another modification the orifice may be the annular gap between a piston and the walls of a closed container.
