Abstract

A process for the preparation of copolymers wherein (i) ether-like reaction products obtained by the reaction of epoxy resins with partial ethers of polyhydroxy compounds which have unsaturated ether groups or with aliphatic epoxy compounds which have unsaturated ether groups are co-polymerized with (ii) monomeric acrylic and/or methacrylic esters. Examples of compounds under (i) are those obtained by reacting an epoxy resin, e.g. that derived from the reaction of dihydric phenols with epichlorohydrin with trimethylol propane diallyl ether or allyl glycidyl ether in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. The unsaturated epoxy derivatives are then polymerized with compounds under (ii) optionally with the addition of further vinyl monomers, e.g. acrylic or methacrylic acid by solution techniques using conventional peroxy catalysts.
