Abstract

A pharmaceutical pastille comprises an outer layer of gelatin, a minor proportion of an aliphatic polyhydric alcohol and a therapeutic amount of at least one medicament selected from antitussives, expectorants, batericides and bacteriostats, and a aqueous, liquid, demulcent core. Specified medicaments include morphine, codeine, pholcodine, dextromethorphan, squill, apomorphine, ipecacuanha, noscapine, creosote, guaiacol, terpine hydrate, tyrothricin, gramicidin, penicillin, cetrimide and like active quarternary ammonium salts. Constituents of the demulcent liquid may include sorbitol, chloroform and essential oils. A local anaesthetic, e.g. benzocaine, amethocaine, benzamine or clove oil may be present in the shell or core.
