A photographic camera 10 is provided with a control feeler in the form of a pin 19 attached to one end of a slide member 20, which feeler is spring urged to the position shown in the absence of film so that the other end of the slide blocks the movement of a shutter release rod 22. When a film cartridge is inserted in a chamber (15a) Fig. 4 (not shown), the film is fed to a take up cartridge in a chamber (15b) by sprocket wheels (18). One marginal edge of the film depresses the pin (19) Fig. 1 (not shown) and thus moves the other end of the slide out of the path of the rod (22). The pin 19 can be located in a different position relative to the chamber 15a according to whether it is desired to release the rod 22 when film in general is present, or only when film is correctly positioned for an exposure.
