Abstract

1,059,871. Stuffing-boxes; valves. CRANE Ltd. Nov. 14, 1963, No. 45030/83. Headings F2B and F2V. In a stuffing-box assembly for a valve the heads of the gland bolts 15 for compressing the packing are retained by a member 12 which is formed by two halves clamped around the box 6 and also provides a journal bearing for the valve hand wheel 21. The halves of the member 12 are connected by bolts or rivets 14, 24 and are formed with yoke arms 22 having lugs 23 providing a bearing for the hand wheel shank 25 and apertures 13 which enclose the heads of the bolts 15, the shanks of the bolts projecting through a space 16 between the halves. When the packing is being inspected or replaced the bolts 15 may be swung downwardly and outwardly. The box 6 is secured to the valve body 1 by brazing, soldering, welding or other means In a modification (Figs. 7-10), the halves of the member (12) are formed with semicircular portions which provide bores (40) through which the bolts (15) pass with their heads (28) abutting the face (30) of the member 12 and being prevented from becoming detached from the member, when the nuts (19) are removed, by lugs (50) on the valve body (1).
