Abstract
A copolymer of a polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated compound and a cellulose derivative is produced by forming a thiocarbonate derivative of cellulose comprising cellulose mono- or di-thiocarbonate or cellulose dithiocarbonic acid and reacting the thiocarbonate derivative with at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer in the presence of a free radical initiator. Specified ethylenically unsaturated monomers are styrene, p-chloromethyl styrene, sodium - p - styrenesulphonate, vinyl toluene, 2-5-dichlorostyrene, alpha-methyl styrene, acrylic and methacrylic acids, esters and amides, dialkyl esters, vinyl and vinylidene chlorides, maleates, fumarates and itaconates, vinyl ketones and ethers, vinyl esters, vinyl pyridines and pyrrolidones, vinyl triethoxyl silane, divinyl benzene and divinyl sulphone. The thiocarbonation may take place by treatment of the cellulose in the form of suspension, mat or sheet with carbon disulphide after which the derivative which is a salt or acid is prepared. The process may be carried out by initially forming an ammonium, organic ammonium, sulphonium, phosphonium, arsonium, stibonium or an alkali metal salt of cellulose dithiocarbonate, converting it, if desired, to cellulose dithiocarbonic acid or a cellulose dithiocarbonate of another metal and thereafter reacting the cellulose dithiocarbonate salt or the cellulose dithiocarbonic acid with the ethylenically unsaturated monomer, if desired in the presence of water. Alternatively there may be formed initially an alkali metal, ammonium or water-soluble amine salt of a cellulose monothiocarbonate, and afterwards, if desired, reacting this salt with a salt of another metal to give the cellulose metal mono-thiocarbonate salt and thereafter reacting with the monomer. The cellulose thiocarbonate derivative may be reacted with the monomer in concentration from about 0.05 to 99.9% of the monomer, the monomer being in solution in water in a concentration of from 1 to 100%, at 0 to 100 DEG C. for 3 minutes to 96 hours. In a typical example of dithiocarbonation dry defibred bleached southern pine sulphate pulp is treated with 0.25 M sodium silicate solution and later filtered to give an alkaline-wet cellulose pad which is crumbled and placed in an evacuated vacuum dessicator over carbon disulphide and later washed to give the dithiocarbonated pulp.
