Abstract

105,960. Garner, C. N., and Wild, E. J. May 2, 1916. K n o c k - down boxes; corner joints and strengthening- pieces; lids and covers.-A collapsible box is made with a bottom 1, Fig. 3, sides 2, ends 3, and lid 4 of three-ply wood with strengthening - battens, which form frames surrounding panels. The bottom 1 has triangular sheet-metal strengthening-brackets 9, Figs. 3 and 8, secured to its corners, upstanding sides 10 of the brackets embracing the wood of the battens or of the battens and the actual bottom; the bottom may be strengthened by a plate sunk in it or placed between it and its battens and secured by nails &c. passed through perforations. The ends 3 are hinged to the bottom and have metal angle-bindings 11, 12, Figs. 3 and 9, secured to their upright edges and forming housings to receive the edges of the loose sides 2; the necks of studs 14, secured to metal straps embracing the sides, take into recesses in the anglebindings. In a modification, the ends 3 are hinged so as to be foldable down under the bottom, and the sides 2 are hinged to fold over the bottom, certain of the hinges being bent to enable one side to fold over the other; in this case, the sides 2 carry pivoted flat-headed studs 20, Fig. 11, the flat shanks 21 of which are adapted to enter the recesses in the angle-bindings of the ends 3, while a sloped formation at 23 effects a tightening action. The sides 2 may have dowels on their lower edges entering holes in the bottom, the dowels having flat perforated shanks driven into the wood and secured by pins etc.; the dowels may be screw-threaded to receive nuts, and the holes in the bottom are, in this case, strengthened by small plates. The lid 4 has an angular metal binding 31 secured to it, which may be in two pieces riveted together at the ends. Links 42, Fig. 13, pivoted to the depending flange of the binding, have passed through them screws 35 engaging nuts 36 secured by pierced plates 41 in holes in the ends or sides of the box. Or screws passing through the binding flange may pass into the nuts, and these nuts 'may be secured by pierced bent metal straps embracing the edges of the box-ends; this arrangement may be somewhat modified. The lid binding is bulged or bent at the corners 44 to receive the heads of the studs 14 or 29 above referred to; or the lid may be slightly lengthened for a similar purpose. When the box 1, Fig. 3, is collapsed, the lid is inverted and the sides 2 are laid in it, and the bottom with the folded-down ends is laid on the top of the sides, the lid and bottom being then connected by passing the screws 35 through the links 42 and into nuts that are embedded in the ends of the bottom and are secured by pierced plates 46 embracing the edges of the bottoms. In some eases, the ends 3 are uppermost in the collapsed condition. and their edges carry turn-buckles adapted to engage in pivoted links on one side of the box lid and in hinged hasps on the other side, the screws 35 being reinserted in their nuts; these links and hasps may receive screws such as 35, or turnbuckles, whether the box is set up or closed. In the construction referred to in which the sides as well as the ends are hinged to the bottom, one of these sides has nuts in its ends to receive screws passing through pivoted links on the lid binding when the bcx is collapsed, the box being entirely contained in the lid.
