Abstract

In heat-treating and cooling stages of false-twist crimping, a yarn passes through a U-shaped guide conduit the inlet and outlet ends of which are adjacent the distance there-between being independent of the overall length of the conduit. In a multiple station machine the two branches (7a, 7b) of each conduit are horizontal and located one above the other; the conduits open alternately at opposite sides of the machine; the entry branches (7a) are heated by passage through a common, electrically heated and heat insulated, metallic block (8); the other branches (7b) are cooled by passage through the atmosphere, or a vessel in which water circulates, and circulation of an air stream therethrough. In or near the bend (7c) between branches, one or more suction pipes (58) or apertures enable waste vapours produced in heated branches to be withdrawn into common suction collecting conduits (59). Yarn is "threaded-up" by sucking or blowing it through the conduit by temporarily connecting one end to a flexible pipe (60) leading to a travelling vacuum pump (49) or a compressor: another suction member (50) attached to the pump (49) enables withdrawal of an initial uncrimped or unsatisfactory crimped yarn portion prior to connection of correctly crimped yarn to a receiving reel.
