Abstract

In copying an original disposed on one cylinder on to a second cylinder having a photo-sensitized surface, the two cylinders are mounted in parallel spaced-apart relationship and rotated in opposite directions; a light source and optical system are moved along axially between the cylinders so that the light, falling on the original cylinder, scans it in a helical path, and the reflected beam passes through the optical system to trace a corresponding helix on the copy cylinder. Cylinder 1 may have the original pattern or sheet secured round it, and the copy cylinder may be treated with a photo-sensitive material. The two cylinders are mounted parallel to each other, and rotated in opposite directions by synchronous motors 8, 9 respectively. A light source 13 and optical system 11 are disposed between the cylinders, and can move parallel to them along a lead screw 14 driven by a motor 15. The optical system comprises a roof prism 5 and a series of lenses 3, 4, 6, so that light reflected from the part of cylinder 1 illuminated by the source passes through the optical system and falls as a reversed image on copy cylinder 2. As the cylinders rotate, and the optical system and light source progress along the lead screw, the light falling on cylinder 1 scans it in a helical path, and similarly the image falling on cylinder 2 also traces a helical path. Cylinder 2 may be of greater diameter than cylinder 1, if a magnified image is required.
