Abstract

The invention comprises 1-aryl-3-anilino-5-pyrazolones of the general formula <FORM:1059146/C2/1> wherein J represents chlorine, nitro or cyano; W represents hydrogen or chlorine; X represents hydrogen, cyano or nitro; Y represents hydrogen, chlorine, cyano or methylsulphonyl; and Z represents hydrogen or cyano, provided that at least one of W, X, Y and Z is not hydrogen. They may be prepared by a general synthesis for making 1-aryl-3-anilino-5-pyrazolones, namely by mixing together an arylhydrazine and a methyl b -methylmercapto-b -arylimino propionate and heating said mixture. If desired, this reaction may be stopped at the formation of an amide hydrazone intermediate which may be isolated and cyclized in a separate step with sodium methylate.
