Abstract

1,059,017. Photo-composing machines. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. June 10, 1965 [June 26, 1964], No.24522/65. Heading B6W. [Also in Division H4] An optical deflecting means comprises three electro-optical elements (45, 47, 49) each comprising an electro-optically active crystal (e.g. KD 2 PO 4 ) (45a &c.) between two transparent electrodes (45b, 45c &c.). and three birefringent elements (46, 48, 50) having lengths in the ratio 4: 2:1. A light source (1) is rendered parallel by a lens (2), passes through an opaque plate (3) with transparent characters (4), a lens (5), a polarizer (6), and two groups (101 &c.), (201 &c.) of deflection elements, the first group producing 0 to 7 units of vertical displacement and the second group horizontal displacement, so that the part of the beam containing a selected character passes through an aperture (8) in a diaphragm (9). The beam is reflected to the left-hand end of a third group of deflection elements (301 &c.), of lengths proportional to 32:16: 8: 4: 2: 1, whereby it is displaced horizontally to a desired one of 64 positions on a film (14). After printing a line, the film is displaced vertically, or alternatively a further group of vertical deflection elements is provided so as to print a complete page without moving the film. Elements for displacement by fractions of a unit can be used for subscript, proportional letter spacing &c. The plate (3) may carry component elements of Sanskrit or other characters.
