[Also in Division B8] In a labelling machine, a web feeding arrangement from a feed roll to a take up roll via an intermediate web driver has tension sensing detectors either side of the intermediate driver, acting respectively on the feed roll and the takeup roll to control the tension of the web. A yielding interconnection is provided between the two detectors so that the tension of the web either side of the intermediate web driver is maintained equal. Feeding webs.-The web is fed from a web roll 1, Fig. 4, by a continuously rotating pinwheel feed 3 via a dancing roller 5, which controls via linkages and levers 72, 68 and 64 a brake 61 acting on the web roll spindle. The chalk applied to the take-up roll 2 is controlled by a dancing roller 12, Figs. 3 and 4, acting through linkages and levers 99, 94, 91 and 89 on a clutch arrangement 83 and 84 driven by a continuously rotating sprocket 82. A yielding interconnection between the two levers 99 and 72 supporting the dancer rollers 12 and 5, respectively, comprises a fluid pressure piston and cylinder arrangement 78, 79. The pressure of the fluid entering through the conduit 81 is controlled manually to preset the tension in the web. The yielding interconnection between the detectors may be a spring. Means are provided for adjusting the distances x and y, Fig. 4, and by adjusting these distances relatively to each other an initial balance of tension on opposite sides of the pin-wheel 3 can be obtained. Labelling.-The web carries labels which are to be applied to glass phials mounted on a turret 26, Fig. 1 (not shown). The web passes from the pin roller 3, over rollers 7 and 8, heated platens 58 and 59 and over a cam operated reciprocating transferring roller 16. heated by a member 24, before passing to the dancer roller 12 of the take-up mechanism. An intermittent controlled registering feed is achieved with looping rollers 13 and 7 attached to a member 51, Fig. 4, reciprocated by arm 52.
