Abstract

The low temperature stability of an acid emulsion of hydrocarbons and/or petroleum resins is improved by adding 0.1 to 15% of glycerine and/or ethylene glycol. The emulsion may include 0.01 to 10% hydrochloric, formic or acetic acid and 0.1 to 5% cationic emulsifier (examples given). In manufacture, the water, emulsifier and acid are circulated and the hydrocarbon (e.g. bitumen) injected. A mixture of water and the anti-freeze is then added. The resin is produced by catalytic polymerization of steam-cracked petroleum distillate or of olefins and diolefins, and may be fluxed with oil. The emulsions contain 50 or 60% hydrocarbon or resin and are used for roads, weather proofing and agricultural mulches.ALSO:The low temperature stability of an acid emulsion of hydrocarbons and/or petroleum resins is improved by adding 0.1 to 15% of glycerine and/or ethylene glycol.
