1,058,235. Mechanical seals. MORGANITE CARBON Ltd. Nov. 5, 1964 [Nov. 13, 1963], No. 44894/63. Heading F2B. In a mechanical seal adapted to seat in an aperture and comprising a sealing ring 1 carried by a retaining portion 2 and having a sealing face urged into contact with a counterface 4 by a spring 3 compressed between the ring 1 and a base portion of a U-section housing 8 fixed in relation to the aperture, a flexible web 13 extends across the opening in the housing and has at least one aperture 15 therein to provide a path for the sealed fluid between the outer edge of the sealing face and a position which is axially in line with at least part of the sealing face and is between the ring 1 and the base portion whereby in use, the pressure of the fluid on the seal does not oppose the action of the spring. Preferably, the said position is within the cylinder defined by the line 19 which extends axially from the outer edge of the sealing so that the fluid pressure on the seal augments the spring action. The web 13 extends to a lip 12 on the housing 8 and then at 14 around the outer wall 11 to form a seal between the housing and the apparatus 9 to be sealed. The portion 2 has an extension 16 formed with sealing lips 17 and 18 that engage the inner wall 10 of the housing 8. The sealing ring retaining portion 2 and the parts integral therewith are preferably made of rubber.
