Abstract

Kerbs or gutters are made from a composition comprising aggregate having no particles more than 9.5 mm. average diameter and all retained on a No. 200 A.S.T.M. sieve, bitumen, and elemental sulphur, the voids in the aggregate being not over 95% filled and the weight ration of sulphur to bitumen being at least 0.5:1. The void volume of the aggregate, which is of inorganic material such as sand, stone, gravel, slag &c. is between 18 and 26% preferably 20-24%, and the total void volume of the composition is at 3% of the volume of the aggregate. Preferably pyrogenous bituminous material, e.g. residual oils, residual bitumen, blown petroleum bitumen, tar or pitch having a penetration of 40-300 dmm., is used. Mixing in of the sulphur, which is in any physical form, is effected below 177 DEG C., to avoid chemical reaction, and above 113 DEG C., the melting-point of sulphur. The bitumen constitutes at least 4.5% by weight of the composition and the sulphur/bitumen ratio should not exceed 4:1 and is preferably 0.75-2:1.
