Abstract

Freshly excavated superphosphate, obtained by the action of acid on crushed phosphate rock, is fed continuously to a conditioner wherein it is kneaded by rotating helical members driven at a tip speed in excess of a critical speed (as defined) and thus formed into granules of a size suitable for passing to a granulator for completing granulation. Water may be added as a spray during the kneading process, which may be controlled to reduce the free acid to less than 7% H3PO4 and to produce superphosphate of particle size not more than 1/2 -inch; when the acid and moisture content exceeds 18% fine particles of cured superphosphate may be added during conditioning. The critical speed is the tip speed of the helical members which allows the material to be just thrown off the tips of the helical members by centrifugal force. The conditioner (not shown) comprises a pair of helical members each consisting of a shaft and longitudinally spaced paddles rotatable in a trough of conveyer belting.
