Abstract

In a motor vehicle steering system with means for reducing the transmission of castoring forces to the steering wheel, the means is connected to the vehicle gear change mechanism whereby it is rendered inoperative in the upper speed range of the vehicle. In Fig. 1, movement of gear lever 1, which is connected to both gear-box 12 and steering gear 10, from low-speed zone I to a high-speed zone II, actuates a control element 13 to transmit steering reaction as by reducing the pressure in a pneumatic or hydraulic steering system or by disconnecting the steering shaft 14 from a non-reactive worm and nut steering mechanism and connecting it to a reversible worm and nut steering mechanism. In an alternative, Figs. 2, 3, a valve 28, which selectively provides feel, is included in a power steering valve 19 for controlling the connections between two double-acting hydraulic steering rams 41, 42 and line 21 from 8 lines 22, 23 to pump 46. The valve 19 comprises an opencentre valve spool 20 secured to the end of steering shaft 14 which is moved axially when rotated due to the reaction between the helical thread 18 of the shaft 14 and the internal thread of steering nut 15 which engages a sector 16 connected to the wheels through links 8, 9 to provide steering position feed-back. In the position shown of valve 28, no steering reaction is transmitted to the steering wheel but, when the valve is rotated through 90 degrees, pressure fluid enters chamber 34 through bores 30, 32 and/or 31, 33 applying axial forces to pistons 35, 36 which normally abut stops 37, 38. When the shaft 14 is rotated and hence moved axially, one of the pistons abuts on the corresponding flange 39 or 40 on spool 20, applying an axial force which produces a tangential force on the steering wheel due to the reaction between shaft 14 and nut 15. In a further alternative, a road roller (Fig. 5, not shown), the steering wheel is connected to the steering roller either through an hydraulic ram for site work or through a reversible mechanical steering mechanism for road travel.
