A drainage system for removing effluent water from a plurality of discharge points 14, 15, 16, all on the same storey of a building comprises a cast, effluent collecting box 1 having a main outlet 7 (Fig. 10) or a branch outlet leading to a main outlet pipe 7 (Fig. 2), and individual connecting pipes 10 leading to the collecting box from each one of the discharge points separately, without crossing over any of the other connecting pipes, the joint between each connecting pipe and the box incorporating a sliding seal (e.g. a rubber ring 12) permitting relative movement of the pipe (Fig. 10). Alternative forms of joint are illustrated (Fig. 12 not shown). The box is preferably mounted in the floor and may be joined directly through a pipe (5) (Fig. 9, not shown) to effluent discharging points disposed above the box. A removable lid may be provided on the box for cleaning purposes.
