Abstract
2,3 - Dihydrothiophene - 1,1 - dioxide and monalkyl derivatives thereof are prepared by the isomerisation of 2,5-dihydrothiophene-1,1-dioxide and monalkyl derivatives thereof by contacting the latter with an alkaline catalyst which is soluble in the reaction mixture and which is a sodium, potassium or lithium hydroxide or alkaline salt, or a strong organic base, in the substantial absence of a substance capable of forming an addition compound with the 2,5-dihydrothiophene-1,1-dioxide or the monoalkyl derivative thereof or the isomer so formed, and in the presence of a solvent. When butadiene sulphone is isomerized, unreacted butadiene sulphone may be decomposed to butadiene and SO2 by heating, the butadiene and SO2 being recovered, reconverted to butadiene sulphone and recycled to the process.
