Abstract
1,057,510. Vehicle suspensions. ADAM OPEL A.G. Dec. 16, 1965 [Dec. 23, 1964; May 31, 1965], No. 53396/65. Heading B7D. A rigid live axle suspension includes a pair of guide arms 11, 12, resiliently mounted in the vehicle at their forward ends to allow pivotal movement about vertical and longitudinal axes and each having a half bearing support 23, for the rear axle, completed by a bearing cover 24 secured by a pair of bolts, the axle connections including rubber sleeves 25 having lateral annular flanges 26 and 27. Cantilever brackets comprising webs 35 and 36 flanking each guide arm and a web 37 forming a lever support for a helical spring 46 are welded to the axle tubes 3 and 4. A bolt 38 mounted in a rubber/metal bushing 40 affords a connection between the bracket webs 35, 36 and the guide arm and rearward extensions of the brackets provide mountings for vibration dampers 47 and 48. A lateral guide arm 28 is resiliently connected to the body at one end and to the guide link 12 at the other. The vibration dampers include resilient connections to the body at their upper ends. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the cantilever brackets extend downwardly and the resilient connections with the guide arms are below the axle. The resilient connection includes a kidney-shaped bolt (82) and cavities (87 and 88) are formed in the bush (84) in front of and behind the bolt. In a modification to this resilient connection, Fig. 8 (not shown), a kidney-shaped shank (117) of the connecting bolt is sandwiched between pre-stressed rubber elements (118 and 119). In Fig. 2, the suspension springs extend from below the axle, and in a modified construction, Fig. 9, al, o not shown. the springs are wholly located above the axle.
