Abstract

A bismuth - magnesium alloy containing less than 85.1% by weight of bismuth is subjected to neutron irradiation to form a polonium - 210 radio-active source. The alloy is made by melting the metals together in an induction furnace or resistance furnace at a temperature below 950 DEG C. in an atmosphere of argon, carbon dioxide, or sulphur dioxide.
