Abstract
1,057,310. Crimping yarn. H. EPSTEIN. Sept. 9, 1964 [Oct. 15, 1963], No. 36885/64. Headings DID and D1F. In a method of compression-crimping yarn in which the core or plug of yam moves in a curved path, the density or length of the plug is observed and the speed of feeding or withdrawal is manually varied in accordance with the observation. Yam 29 passes around grooved rollers and is fed by rollers 22, 25 into a crimping tube 30. Heater 32 comprises two semi-circular chambers pivoted at 33 and having handles 36, Fig. 3 (not shown), to open them, heating elements, refractory lining, and baffles to reduce heat loss when the chambers are opened. Tube 40 is at least partially translucent-by being made of polytetrafluoroethylene-for the core of yarn therein to be observed. The withdrawal speed is greater than the feeding speed with the operator stopping the withdrawal from time to time to ensure the end of the core is on the gravity side of tube 40. Alternatively rollers 22, 25 may be driven by a variable speed motor. Lubricating oil is supplied to the yarn from reservoir 44 or by passing the yarn over an oil roller. The yarn on leaving tube 26A passes through the nip of two rollers one resting on the other to provide sufficient resistance to pull yarn out of most entanglements which might occur but insufficient resistance to cause yarn breakage. A spring tensioned wire is provided to stop through solenoids &c. the motor or motors driving the feed rolls and take-up roll if the yarn breaks on being wound up.
