A process for the preparation of an offset lithographic printing plate comprises producing on a layer of hydrophilic resin carried on a support, e.g. of kraft paper, and containing a finely divided reactive pigment, an image from which prints are to be made and rendering the non-image areas of the layer hydrophilic by application to the layer of an aqueous solution of a ferrocyanide or a ferricyanide such solution reacting with the pigment. The reactive pigment may be an oxide or sulphide of cadmium, molybdenum, antimony, bismuth, lead or zinc. The image may be produced on the plate either directly by inscribing the image, e.g. by typing, writing or drawing, on the surface of the resin layer using an oleophilic medium or by providing the layer with a surface coating of lightsensitive material and using photographic methods. The aqueous solution may contain copolymeric organic acid and/or phosphoric acid. It may also contain up to 10% by weight of an organic solvent to enhance the wetting properties of the solution. Further optional additives include wetting and/or thickening agents. A typical hydrophobic resin layer may comprise an amine-formaldehyde resin and a cross-linking agent therefor.
