Abstract

1,057,094. Electrophotography. ARTHUR D. LITTLE Inc. April 15, 1964 [April 16. 1963], No. 15704/64. Heading H1K. A material suitable for electrostatic reproduction comprises a substrate and a photoconductive film attached thereto said photoconductive film having air-containing voids greater than 0À5Á distributed therethrough. The photoconductive film may comprise a film of poly (N-vinyl carbazole) or a binder with solid photoconductive particles dispersed therein with or without a sensitizing dye, examples being given. The photoconductive particles may be oxides, sulphides, selenides, tellurides and iodides of Cd, Hg, Sb Bi Th, In, Mo, Al, Pb and Zn, also arsenic trisulphide, cadmium arsenide, lead chromate and Se. The substrate may be flexible or rigid, e.g. paper, metal foil or paper loaded with carbon black. Suitable binders of thermosetting and thermoplastic nature are specified. A method for making the above electrophotographic plate comprises dissolving a film-forming photoconductive material in a solvent, emulsifying a volatile liquid immiscible with said solvent in the solvent, applying a film of the emulsion to a substrate, and drying the coating with the removal of the solvent and the volatile liquid thus forming a photoconductive layer having dispersed therein air voids of at least 0À5Á. The emulsion may be of the water-in-oil type when the photoconductive layer is an organic material whilst an oil-inwater emulsion may also be used. In specific embodiments oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions are used to prepare the material, the constituents being ZnO or poly(N-vinyl carbazole) as photoconductive material; casein. polyvinyl alcohol or ethyl cellulose as binder, kerosene or benzene as the oil together with a specified dye and specified emulsifiers. The cellular structure may be a closed or open foam.
