Abstract

1,057,060. Testing cigarettes. D. W. MOLINS and MOLINS ORGANISATION Ltd. Dec. 6, 1965 [Dec. 9, 1964], No. 50056/64. Heading A2C. The resistance to air flow of cigarettes is tested by applying suction to one end of each cigarette through an air tight connection. The cigarettes C are conveyed transversely to their axes on conveyers 1 and 3, the: conveyer 1 having resilient semi-circular holders 16 which co-operate with resilient semi-circular holders 15 on a drum 9 to form an air-tight seal between the mouthpiece end M of the cigarette and a connector tube 17, a plurality of which are carried by the drum 9 adjacent holders 15. The drum 9 is keyed to a shaft 10 rotatable in bearing 11 of the block 12. A carbon ring 22 is mounted between the drum 9 and block 12 and, except in the testing region, covers holes 20 and 28 in the drum 9 communicating with each tube 17. At the testing station the carbon ring is provided with holes 24 and 25 which connect the tube 17 to a source of suction 26. The hole 28 communicates with a pressure sensing device 31 via a hole 29 in the carbon ring. If the air flow through a cigarette exceeds a predetermined maximum an indication is given by the device 31 which may operate subsequent faulty cigarette rejector mechanism.
