Abstract

Fibreboard and like material is surfaced by applying to a lap of wet fibre on a porous surface such as a Fourdrinier wire an aqueous suspension of material obtained from bark, dewatering the mass and then drying or hot-pressing to obtain either a porous or a hard board. The bark material is obtained by mechanical defibration or chemical treatment with sodium hydroxide or sulphide. Wood fibre, inorganic fibres such as glass fibres, or synthetic organic fibres may be included, together with water-soluble, non-corrosive inorganic salts such as aluminium, ferrous, or potassium sulphate, aluminium or ammonium phosphate, or aluminium chloride which serve as pH buffers. Other additions specified are gypsum, potassium titanate, and binders such as phenol-, urea-, or melamine-formaldehyde resins. The bark material is prepared from bark substantially free from cork, e.g. spruce, pine, fir, cedar and poplar.
