Abstract

Iron ore, with or without carbonaceous reducing agent, is charged into a rotary kiln in which oxidizing conditions are maintained in the initial zone so that impurities such as sulphur are removed. The ore is subsequently reduced by the addition of carbonaceous reductant directly to the kiln, while further carbonaceous reducing agent is added near the discharge end of the kiln in order that the product shall have at least sufficient carbon to promote complete metallization on subsequent smelting. The contents of the kiln do not at any time occupy more than 15% of the cross-sectional area of the kiln. Air may be admitted at points along the kiln in order to maintain the desired conditions, while fines from the exhaust gases are introduced together with the reductant at an intermediate point in the kiln. In one embodiment the kiln may discharge directly into a rotating hearth electric furnace. In another embodiment of the invention, natural gas or other gas containing a substantial proportion of methane is injected at points along the kiln and beneath the bed.
