Abstract

Epoxyalkyl esters of monocarboxylic acids are made by heating an epoxy halogen alkane with a salt of the carboxylic acid which is in the form of a suspension in an organic solvent, said suspension being made by adding an aqueous solution of a hydroxide to a solution of the acid in an organic solvent and distilling off the water. Suitable solvents are hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons and ethers. It is preferred to use a solvent which forms an azeotrope with water. Specified hydroxides are alkali hydroxides and quaternary ammonium hydroxides. Tertiary amines or quaternary ammonium salts may be used as catalysts. The example relates to the glycidyl ester of a C9 acid obtained by reacting isobutene dimer with carbon monoxide and water.
