Abstract

A yarn tensioning device comprises a pad urged by a spring against a braking surface, so that when the yarn is tensioned excessively it is pulled from beneath the pad and is released from the device. The yarn is fed from a bobbin through the device 5 (Fig. 1, not shown) and over a hook 7 to the needles, the yarn is guided between the arms 9, 9b (Fig. 2, not shown) of the device and across braking surface 10 under the pad 13. When the yarn is tensioned excessively it is released by the hook 7 and stopping of the machine initiated. The yarn reaches the position B before the machine has stopped and slips down the sloping edge of the braking surface from under the pad and between the arms.
