A double chain-stitch zig-zag sewing machine comprises a looper beak movable in an alliptical path and having an edge adapted to receive and hold the needle thread loop during the loop-taking stroke, and a stationery finger entering into the path of the looptaker beak during the return stroke and adapted both to release the needle thread loop from said edge after the descending needle enters the triangle formed by the looper thread and the needle thread loop, and also to control the subsequent removal of said loop from the beak. A looper beak 6' carried on a pivoted arm 10, is formed on its forward face with a pair of protuberances 15 over which the needle thread loop 13 passes near the end of the loop-taking stroke. During the return, needle-avoiding stroke, loop 13 is held by the rear edges 15' of the protuberances 15, and the tip 17' of a fired finger 17 enters a longitudinal groove 16 formed in the forward face of beak 6'. The arrangement is such that when the descending needle 4 enters the triangle formed by loop 13 and the looper thread 14, a notch 21 in tip 17' engages loop 13 to release the latter from the edges 15', and the subsequent sliding of loop 13 over the tip of beak 6' is controlled by the leading edge 19 of tip 17'.
