Abstract
<PICT:1056712/C6-C7/1> <PICT:1056712/C6-C7/2> An electrolytic cell comprises a base, a pair of opposide end walls as 4 and a pair of opposed side walls 1, bi-polar electrodes 3 extending between the side walls, pairs of spacers 7 secured to opposite side walls with the electrodes 3 slotted between each two successive spacers, and fluid permeable diaphragms 5 supported at opposite side edges by a pair of spacers and disposed between each adjacent pair of electrodes. As shown, the spacers are secured to the walls by engagement in recesses therein and frame members 8 secured to the diaphragm, which may be of woven glass, PVC or PTFE, or less desirably asbestos paper are cemented into grooves in the base of the cell and also are sealed into the cell cover 11, while the diaphragm side edges are held in slots in the spacers by plastic rods pressed into the slots. The electrodes 3, which may be of graphite or platinised titanium, are located in the cell by splines 9 fitting into grooves in the cell bottom, side walls and cover, which cover may be formed of separate strips sealed to the diaphragm top frames and electrode splines, and end electrodes as 6 are connected to a D.C. source. For electrolyzing e.g. at 90 DEG C. hydrochloric acid to yield chlorine and hydrogen, the cell casing may be of rigid PVC, hard rubber or a chlorinated polyester and may have external reinforcing metal bands, or may be of concrete or cement coated internally with such corrosion resistant materials. Electrolyte containing the chlorine and hydrogen evolved is withdrawn by gas lift along pipes 13, 17 respectively to gas separating chambers 21, 22 respectively, the degassed electrolyte being returned to cell via pipes 15, 19. Weir barriers 23 extending to the bottoms of chambers 21, 22 provide for electrical isolation of the various electrolyte streams. Hydrochloric acid is added to the electrolyte in chamber 21 and part of the depleted acid electrolyte is allowed to overflow from chamber 22, the depleted acid being concentrated and subsequently returned to the cell.
