Abstract

1,056,601. Laminates. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. Jan. 29, 1965 [March 6, 1964], No. 4077/65. Heading B5N. A process for producing a non-roughening micro-porous laminate comprises (a) coating the surface of a porous fibrous web with a liquid dispersion comprising a polymeric component and a solvent therefor and optionally a non- solvent therefor which is miscible with said solvent, the porous fibrous web having a tensile strength of at least one pound per inch, a break elongation of 7 to 35%, a modulus of 150 to 12,000 pounds per square inch at 5% elongation a thickness of 3 to 12 mils. and a smoothness factor not exceeding 5 mils. and the dispersion having a viscosity high enough to permit its retention by the web under the coating conditions and low enough to permit complete penetration of the web under the conditions of step (c) below, the polymeric component having a maximum elastic deformation strength, under the drying conditions of step (e) below, of at least 100 p.s.i., (b) contacting the other surface of the sheet material with a porous substrate sheet, (c) applying suction to the free surface of the substrate sheet and thereby drawing the dispersion through the porous web and at least partially into the substrate sheet to form a laminate,(d) bathing the laminate with a liquid which contains a non- solvent for the polymeric component, which non-solvent is miscible with said solvent, to coagulate the polymeric component and remove solvent, and (e) drying the resultant laminate. A dispersion is defined as including solutions and colloidal dispersions. Specified porous fibrous sheets are woven or non-woven, e.g. twills, drills, ducks, jersey, tricot, knitted materials, felts, needle punched batts and porous batts impregnated with rubber or vinyl halide polymers, specified fibres being polyamides, polyesters, polyesteramides, acrylic polymers, viscose, rayon, wool, cotton, glass and mixtures thereof. Specified polymers are polyurethanes, polyvinyl chloride, copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride or diethyl maleate, polyamides, polyesteramides, polyesters, polyvinyl butyral, poly-α-methyl styrene, polyvinylidene chloride, polymers of alkyl esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids, chlorosulphonated polyethylene, copolymers of butadiene and acrylonitrile, cellulose esters and ethers and polystyrene. Specified solvents are N : N-dimethyl formamide, dimethyl sulphoxide, tetrahydrofuran, tetramethyl urea, N : N-dimethyl acetamide, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, ethyl acetate, dioxane, butyl carbinol, toluene, phenol, chloroform, γ-butyrolactone and mixtures thereof with ketones or alcohols. Specified non-solvents are water, ethylene glycol, glycerol, glycol monoethyl ether, hydroxyethylacetate, t-butyl alcohol, 1 :1 :1 -trimethylol propane, methanol, ethanol, hexane, benzene, naphtha, toluene, tetrachloroethylene and chloroform.
