A wire mesh guard 3 for a tractor power takeoff shaft 1 is hinged at 9 to the tractor and resiliently supported on the lower links 7, 8 of the tractor three-point linkage mechanism. The guard has side and bottom walls 26 and 28, 29 and has side bolts sliding in slotted guides 15, 16 fast with springs 5, 6 fast with loose U- shackles 12 around the lower links 7, 8. An auxiliary guard 23 may be hinged to the guard end-and may be mounted on the links 7, 8 as the main guard.
