Abstract
1,056,049. Thermoelectric devices. BORGWARNER CORPORATION. April 29, 1964 [May 17, 1963]. No. 17853/64. Heading H1K In a thermoelectric refrigerator comprising a " freezer " compartment and a " cooler " compartment thermally isolated from one another and cooled by separate Peltier units, a power supply arrangement switchable between two energy levels is provided, the system being arranged so that such switching does not affect the temperature difference produced by the " freezer " compartment Peltier unit. In a first embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), all the Peltier units are connected in series and supplied with power from rectifiers 47, 48 fed by transformer 46 the primary winding tappings of which are changed by relay 45 controoled by " cooler " compartment thermostat 51 to provide two rates of cooling for the cooler" compartment. The " freezer " compartment Peltier unit produces maximum temperature difference at a current between the two currents supplied by the system, Fig. 4 (not shown), so that the " freezer " compartment is unaffected by the operation of the thermostat. In a second embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), the " cooler " compartment Peltier units are arranged in two groups connected either in series or in parallel by auxiliary contacts of the relay 85 which changes the primary winding taps of the transformer. The system is such that the total impedance of the Peltier units is selected according to the voltage level so that the total current is maintained constant, and hence the " freezer " compartment Peltier unit, which carries the total current, is unaffected by the switching. Since the " cooler " compartment Peltier units are arranged to have peak efficiency at the total current level, when they are connected in parallel their efficiency is decreased and the temperature difference generated is reduced. In a modification of the second embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), the " freezer " compartment Peltier units are arranged for switching in series and parallel and the " cooler " compartment Peltier units carry the total current. The system is arranged so that the current through each " freezer " compartment Peltier unit is constant for both voltage conditions, the total current varying to produce the desired control of the " cooler " compartment Peltier units. As shown, Fig. 1, the Peltier elements 32 are mounted between tapered heat-conducting members 31, 33 on which are mounted cold plate 30 and cooling fins 34 respectively. The unit shown is for the " freezer " compartment, and four similar units are provided for the main " cooler " compartment and are mounted with their fins protruding from the back of the cabinet.
