Abstract

1,055,668. Extruding corrugated tubing. BAKER PERKINS GRANBULL Ltd. June 14, 1965 [March 13. 1964]. No. 10768/64. Heading B5A. Corrugated tubing is formed by extruding thermoplastic tubing, e.g. polythene tubing, over a mandrel 10, Fig. 1 (not shown), and expanding it into contact with internally corrugated interlocking mould parts moved at the speed of extrusion by two conveyers 15. The mandrel is provided with a series of ducts, Figs. 4, 5, for expansion fluid, e.g. compressed air, which comprise an inlet path via annular groove 29, ducts 28, axial duct 27 and four diverging ducts 31 to an annular groove 32, and a return path via an annular groove 38, four radial ducts 39, an annular groove 37, a duct 36 and an axial duct 35 formed in an extension 33 of mandrel 10. The axial distance between grooves 32 and 38 is somewhat greater than a corrugation wavelength so that each outward corrugation is effectively blown separately (see Fig. 4), excess air escaping downstream within the moulded tubing and upstream to groove 38 and subsequently downstream via duct, 35 through the moulded tubing.
