Abstract

1,054,916. Lubricating ship's steering propulsion unit. W. REINERS, and G. WIGGERMANN, [trading as REINERS & WIGGERMANN GETRIEBEUND MASCHINENBAU]. July 4. 1963 [July 4, 1962], No. 26533/63. Heading B7V. [Also in Divisions F1 and F2] A ship's propeller 5 (Fig. 1, not shown) is driven by an engine connected to the flange 8 through gears and shafts 9 to 18 and is rotatable about a vertical axis by the shaft 19 and gears 20, 21. A gear pump 24 is driven by the shaft 18 and has a suction aperture situated at a low point in a gondola 4 and delivers oil to an upper gear housing 1c, which forms an oil reservoir above the water level W, via bores 33, 34, trombone pipes 40, 43 and distributing chamber 45 having a sight glass 46. From the chamber 45 oil passes to the various lubrication points in the housing 1c, via e.g. bores 47 and 48, and to the gears 9 and 10 in the housing 1b via the bore 49 in the shaft 11. The gear 9 is arranged to pump excess oil in the housing 1b back to the housing 1c via a pipe (not shown). Oil from the housing 1c flows by gravity through a bore 54, which may be adjustable, and bores 55, 56 and 57 to the gondola 4. The size of the bore 54 is arranged to ensure that the return of the maximum output of the pump 23 to the gondola 4 is only possible at speeds of rotation of the pump below the operating speed of the propeller to ensure that spaces enclosed by the gondola 4, housing 1 and 1b are empty of oil down to the low point in the gondola at the operating speed. The propeller shaft 18 is sealed against the ingress of external water by two axially spaced rings 69 (Fig. 6, not shown) defining an oil pressure space 75 which is connected by a bore 74 to the bore 33. The gondola space 4 is vented via the bores 60, 61, space 62, bore 63 and oil filling screw 64.
