To maintain constant tension the cloth takeup roller 1 is driven by a ratchet operated worm 2 that is axially movable to apply a brake and render inoperative the ratchet when the tension increases. The sley 23 oscillates a lever 20 freely mounted on a shaft 14 that has a fixedly mounted spring loaded lever 13 and a linkage 15, 16, 17, 18 that causes a reversible ratchet pawls 9, 10 to oscillate on the worm shaft 7. For normal running the lever 20 moves the lever 13 causing the pawls to move clockwise and the spring 11 causes the ratchet wheel 6 to move anti-clockwise and drive the worm for take-up. If warp tension increases the torque on the take-up roller 1 causes the worm wheel 2 to move axially and apply a brake 25, 26 which locks the worm and ratchet wheel 6 against rotation so that, when the ratchet pawls 9 are rotated clockwise, the lever 13 remains out of the path of movement of the lever 20 until the tension is relaxed enough for the spring 11 to again operate the ratchet.
