In a universal coupling, connecting a roll 2 to its drive shaft in a rolling mill, comprising a member 7 secured to the drive shaft and universally coupled to a socket 1 adapted to receive a flattened end 12 of the roll 2, a spring- loaded plunger 10 housed in the member 7 engages the socket 1 when the roll is withdrawn therefrom to hold the coupling members in alignment. In Fig. 3, the socket 1 pivots on a pin 5 mounted in a ball 6 housed in the flat end of the member 7, a boss 3 on the roll end 12 holding the nose 11 of a spring-loaded plunger 10, on an extension 8 of the member 7, clear of a bore 4 in the member 1. On withdrawal of the roll, a spring 9 forces the nose 11 into the bore 4. The plunger 10 may alternatively be received within the extension 8. In Fig. 5 (not shown) a member 13 is keyed to a drive shaft 14 and has spherically crowned teeth 15 engaging straight teeth in a socket 17 which receives a roll end 18. A bore 20 through a plate 21 bolted in the socket 17 is engaged by a boss 19 of the roll or by a nose 24 of a spring- loaded locking plunger 22.
