Abstract

1,054,348. Composition for detecting organic halogen compounds. MILES LABORATORIES Inc. Oct. 28, 1965, No. 45700/65. Heading B1X. A composition for detecting organic halogencontaining compounds in aqueous liquids, e.g. urine, comprises a solid acid addition salt of a 2- and 4-unsubstituted pyridine base and solid caustic soda or potash, the weights and weight ratios of the components being such as to cause heating to at least 80‹C. and separation of liquid pyridine base as a supernatant layer, when the composition is added to a predetermined quantity of aqueous liquid. Specified acid salts are the citrate, tartrate, oxalate, malonate, sulphosalicylate, maleate, fumarate, ketomalonate, sulphamate, phosphate, hydrochloride and p-toluene sulphonate, the last mentioned being undesirable. In addition the following compounds are mentioned as binding agents or disintegrating agents for use when the components are tableted: citric acid, tartaric acid, boric acid, potassium peroxosulphate, magnesium trisilicate and polyethylene glycol of m.w. greater than 4000. The presence of halogen (chlorine, bromine and iodine) produces a red colour in the pyridine layer.
