Abstract

[Also in Division F2] A drive mechanism producing unequal stepping angles enables the overall diameter of a rotary tap changer to be reduced by providing varying gaps between the adjacent contacts according to the voltage difference across them. Two embodiments, each comprising modified Geneva motions, are described. In the first (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown) a normal Geneva wheel 5 has a sliding coupling to a crank arm 3 on an output shaft 1 offset from the axis 2 of the wheel 5 such that equal steps of the Geneva wheel 5 produce a cyclic variation in angular steps of the output shaft 1. In the second embodiment a Geneva wheel 6 has, for example, six steps of 50 degrees each driven by a pin 9 engaging successively in slots 20 to 25, but the slot 26 for a seventh step is made wider and drive for this step is by means of a pin 10 acting at a greater radius than pin 9 and engaging a slot 27 in an arm 7 provided immediately beneath the slot 26, whereby a step of 60 degrees is obtained. Similar modification of a second slot may be made to provide two large steps.
