Abstract
1,054,103. Piezo-electric generators. HEINRICH MALTNER G.m.b.H. July 17, 1963 [June 1, 1963], No. 28277/63. Heading H2A. [Also in Division F4] A lighter comprises a spark gap 1 connected to two piezo-electric bodies 4, 5 and manually operated means for deforming the piezoelectric bodies to form a spark. The spark gap 1 has an earthed electrode 2 and an insulated electrode 3 connected to abutting ends 7 of the piezo-electric bodies. The latter are held in an insulating sleeve 6 in a sleeve 12 and may be adjusted longitudinally by a screw 13 acting through a ball 14 abutting a plate 11 at the free end of one of the piezo-electric bodies 5. The sleeve 12 is mounted on a handle 15 fixed to the housing 22 of the lighter. The piezoelectric bodies 4, 5 are deformed by a lever 19 pivoted at 20 to the handle 15 and adapted to press a ball 21 against a plate 10 abutting the free end of the other body 4. The lever 19 is actuated by a pin 18 on a movable handle 16 pivoted at 17 to the fixed handle 15. In Fig. 8 (not shown), which shows a cigarette lighter an operating lever 77 is connected to an arm 80 pivoted to the lighter body and spring- loaded to the position shown by a spring 82 which is connected to a lug 84 on a lever 83 pivoted about a pivot 76 of a cap covering the burner nozzle. One end 85 of the lever 83 abuts the underside of the operating lever 77 and the other end is formed with a cam surface 86 bearing against the top end of a vertical piezo-electric body 88 located in an insulated guide sleeve 90. The bottom end of the piezoelectric body abuts a screw. When lever 77 is depressed, cam 86 deforms body 88. In Fig. 10 (not shown) an L-shaped lever 109 pivoted at 108, when depressed by the operating lever 77 depresses a plunger 112 connected via a fluid 114 in housing 111 to a larger plunger 113 acting on a cap 107 of a vertical piezo-electric body. In Fig. 11 (not shown) a push sleeve 120 is disposed above a piezo-electric body 116 and contains a spring 121 biased against a mass element 122. A stop 123 on a spring- loaded pivoting lever 124 holds the mass 122 in the position shown. When sleeve 120 is depressed, spring 121 is tensioned until an edge 125 of sleeve 120 pushes lever 124 sideways releasing mass 122 to strike a cap 129 abutting the piezo-electric body 116. The piezo-electric bodies may be connected in parallel electrically or mechanically. The piezo-electric bodies may be of a ceramic material containing barium titanate and lead zirconate titanate and calcium titanate.
