Abstract

1,053,656. Pulse generating circuits. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 10, 1964 [June 10, 1963], No. 23036/63. Headings H3P and H3T. In a pulse generator of the type in which a pulse forming network or capacitor is charged through an inductor and then discharged through a load to generate a pulse, a capacitor is arranged to be connected across all or part of the inductor at an instant during charging when the pulse forming network has charged to a required voltage so as to minimize further charging of the network and hence stabilize the output pulse amplitude. Arrangements are provided for usefully employing at least part of the energy stored in the capacitor. As shown in Fig. 5, the pulse forming network PFN is resonantly charged via inductor L1<SP>1</SP> and diode D1 and discharged via a load R1 each time a thyratron V2 is triggered by a source G2. It is shown that during each charging cycle, a trigger circuit G1 is actuated when the PFN is charged to a voltage adjustable by potentiometer R4, so that thyratron V1 is triggered at this instant, connecting capacitor C across inductor L1<SP>1</SP> and effectively preventing further charging. Thyratron V3 is triggered at a period after V2 determined by a delay circuit DC so that capacitor C is then discharged into the PFN or the power supply E + . Silicon-controlled rectifiers may replace the thyratrons shown. In Fig. 1 (not shown) the right-hand side of the capacitor C is connected to a tapping on inductor L1<SP>1</SP> and thyratron V3 is replaced by a diode. In Fig. 4 (not shown) thyratron V3 is replaced by the series combination of a diode and an inductor or resistor. In Fig. 6 (not shown) thyratron V1 is replaced by a diode and the output pulse voltage is adjustable by controlling the triggering time of thyratron V3.
