Apparatus for treating (e.g. scouring, bleaching, dyeing, steeping acidifying and washing) textile material 4 (e.g. hanks in chain form, yarns, braids, fabrics, non-woven fabrics or felt) comprises a number of elongate treatment chambers 21 arranged in zig-zag fashion to form a treatment path for the material, rollers 24 at the junctions of the chambers, means for adjusting the speed of travel of material through the chambers, input and output mouthpieces 1, 9 for the material, means e.g. tubes 8, 6 whereby treatment liquid is admitted at one end of the treatment path and extracted at the other and rollers 2 and 10 within the mouthpieces 1 and 9 for driving the material through the apparatus. Refrigeration or heating chambers 22 are arranged between the chambers 21 to regulate the temperature thereof: the temperature of each chamber 22 may be conrolled individually or, as shown, connecting tubes 23 are provided whereby the same heating or cooling fluid flows through them all. An automatically regulated heating or cooling coil 42 surrounds the material as it leaves the treating chambers. The ends of the treatment path are sealed by the rollers 2, 10 and also by pairs of plates 3, 11 between which the material passes. The treating liquid is pumped via pipes 6, 8 from the input mouthpiece 1 to the output mouthpiece 9 by a pump 7. An auxiliary tank 13 to which liquid passes from the mouthpiece 1 via a tube 12 and from a collecting pan beneath drain rollers 40, supplies liquid to a pump 18 the high pressure side of which is connected to the pipe 6 to apply a static pressure to the liquid in the apparatus. Treating agents may be added to the liquid via the tank 13 and automatic means may be provided in the tank to regulate the addition of treating agents so as to keep the treatment characteristics of the the liquid constant. The material may, as shown, move in the opposite direction to the flow of the treating liquid or it may be passed through the apparatus in the opposite direction in which case the draining rollers 40 are placed beyond the mouthpiece 1. The speed of the driven rollers in the apparatus may be varied either automatically or manually such that an internal strain is put on the material as it passes through the apparatus. The chambers 21 shown are rectangular to receive cloth but they may be cylindrical to accept rope-like materials. The pump 18 for creating static pressure in the apparatus may be dispensed with and the pressure required to ensure the flow of liquid through the apparatus may oe provided by a head of liquid.
