Abstract

1,053,188. Typewriters &c. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Sept. 14, 1964 [Sept. 25, 1963], No. 37429/64. Addition to 995,806. Heading B6F. [Also in Division F2] Variable spacing mechanism.-The typewriter and spacing mechanism is the same as that described in Specification 1,053,186, but the claims relate to the pitch-changing mechanism gearing and the indicator scales. A lever 70 is moved according to the letter-spacing pitch required and which corresponds to the size of the type on the printing head used. The gearbox mechanism is described in Division F2. Scales and indicators.-The amount of letterspaces stored in the spacing mechanism is shown on a scale 82 over which slides a storage indicator 90 with a window 94 having three lengths of opening 98, 99, 100 corresponding to the length of travel of the print-head for each of the settings of the gear-lever 70. Only one of these lengths is visible at a time through an opening in the typewriter frame. The storage indicator is moved across the machine with the printing head which has a pointer 83 and a projection 102 which engages in a secured opening 95 and moves it either in letter-spacing direction by engaging the R.H. end or carriage return by engaging the L.H. end. At all times the amount of letter-space stored is shown by the pointer.
