Abstract

[Also in Division B5] Two orientated thermoplastic film surfaces are sealed by applying a pressure sensitive self-adhesive to each of the surfaces and thereafter pressing the surfaces together. The adhesive may be a "cold seal" adhesive which gives a good joint at room temperature. The seal may be formed at a higher temperature provided that it is less than the temperature at which shrinkage or deterioration of the film takes place. The adhesive is applied by a brush, a roller or by an air knife technique. The seal may be formed by a crimp wheel. The adhesive may comprise natural rubber latex. The adhesive may also comprise a thickening agent, an antioxidant, a wetting agent, a foam suppressor, an alkali sufficient to produce a pH of 9.5-10.0 and tackifying resins. Suitable thickening agents are alginates, soluble cellulose derivatives, e.g. carboxymethyl cellulos and methyl cellulose, casein, ethylene oxide polymers and water soluble acrylates. Suitable tackifying resins are terpene resins, coumaroneindene resins, natural resin and hydrogenated resin. Antiblocking agents, such as polyethylene and paraffin wax, may be added to reduce tack. Tack of the adhesive may also be further controlled by the addition of addition polymer emulsions such as vinyl acetate/ethyl acrylate; styrene/butadiene; and styrene/methyl methacrylate polymer emulsions. Examples are given in which the following substances are also mentioned as ingredients of the adhesive compositions; ammonium hydroxide, a styrenated phenol, sodium di octyl sulphosuccinate, an aliphatic alcohol as antifoaming agent, borax, sodium orthophenyl phenate, and a petroleum/paraffin wax emulsion. The film surfaces may be treated by a corona discharge before the adhesive is applied thereto to increase the adhesion. Alternatively, the film surfaces may be pre-coated with a keying coat, e.g. graft polymers of natural rubber and copolymerizable compounds such as methyl methacrylate, rubbery butadiene/ acrylonitrile copolymers and polyisobutylene. Polystyrene and polyvinyl chloride biaxially orientated films may be sealed by this method. Isotactic polypropylene is disclaimed.
