The invention relates to a process for the production of sulphonic acids which comprises reacting a hydrocarbon, e.g. a cyclic, singly branched or normal paraffin with sulphur dioxide and oxygen in a sulphoxidation reaction in the presence of an organic acid salt of a metal of Group V to VIII of the Periodic Table, e.g. magnesium, iron, cobalt, nickel, tungsten, molybdenum, chromium or palladium.
